Putting together a strong attack for the second straight game, the Los Angeles Kings earned a 4-2 victory over the Utah Mammoth at the Delta Center on Monday evening. The win improved the squad to 14-8-7 and 10-2-4 on the road.
Away games have been a strength for Los Angeles this season, with the Dallas Stars being the only team in the NHL to post a better record on the road thus far. The victory kicked off a short two-game road trip for the Kings after putting together a 2-2 homestand.
It was a hot start for Los Angeles as Adrian Kempe and Joel Armia each scored in the opening period to open up an early 2-0 advantage. Kempe struck first with just over 12 minutes remaining in the opening frame as he used a crafty backhander to sneak the puck past Mammoth netminder Karel Vejmelka.
Kempe, who was assisted on a feed from Kevin Fiala, earned his 10th goal of the season and extended his team-leading point tally to 26. Fiala then picked up his second assist of the period just minutes later as he rocketed the puck down the ice to Armia for the one-on-one score.
Dylan Guenther and the Mammoth managed to cut the lead in half less than a minute into the second period on a power play score. Power play conversion has not typically been an area of success for Utah this season, which is tied for the third-least such scores at 13.
With a 2-1 game heading into the third, Anze Kopitar came through to provide a big insurance score, staying with the play and firing a big cleanup shot into the net. It was the first goal of the month for the captain as Los Angeles regained its two-score lead.
Kopitar secured his 79th-career game-winning goal, passing Peter Bondra and Steve Thomas for the 11th most among players born outside North America in NHL history. The Mammoth represent his 32nd franchise with a goal scored against.
Utah continued to battle, with Clayton Keller firing a backhanded shot past Darcy Kuemper to make it 3-2. Keller became the second captain on the night to score, bringing the Mammoth faithful in the Delta Center back to life with just under eight minutes remaining.
Kuemper held firm the rest of the way, keeping Utah off the board and sealing a much-needed Los Angeles victory to get the win streak to two. On the night, the 35-year-old saved 19 of 21 shots, improving to 9-6-5.
Armia served up the icing on the cake with an empty net goal in the final moments, slinging the puck the length of the ice to give the Kings their fourth and final score. Earning his first career points against the Mammoth, the 32-year-old also notched his first multi-goal game in a Los Angeles uniform.

Monday’s victory was additionally the 900th game in the career of defenseman Cody Ceci, bringing him even with Morgan Rielly as the first two members of the 2012 NHL Draft class to reach the milestone. Ceci is now the first defenseman to play his 900th-career game in a Kings’ uniform since Drew Doughty on Jan. 14, 2020.
Los Angeles will return to action on Wednesday night as they travel to Seattle and face the Kraken. The two squads are yet to face off this season, with Seattle currently sixth in the Pacific Division at 11-10-6 and losers of their last five.
