Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ty Murchison is set to make his NHL debut on Tuesday vs. the San Jose Sharks.
Murchison, 22, was recalled by the Flyers late on Saturday amid questions about Cam York’s health. York is not on injured reserve, so Murchison fills the Flyers’ roster at 23.
Murchison was a 5th-round pick by the Flyers in 2021 and has spent the last four years at Arizona State. The former Sun Devil had 9 goals and 14 assists for 23 points in 145 collegiate games. He earned the NCHC award for the best defensive defenseman in 2025.
The Flyers’ defenseman uses his size and physicality to be a force as a shutdown blueliner. He did it in the NCAA; he has done it in the AHL. Now, Murchison will get a chance to play his game in the NHL.
Murchison is excited for his NHL debut
Murchison plays a fast and physical game, one that he said is better suited for the professionals than college. “I think the pro game fits my game better than college ever did. I like to play a fast-paced, physical game, and it’s been going pretty well so far,” said Murchison.
The young defenseman addressed the media for the first time on Monday, and you could just feel his excitement. With an ear-to-ear smile the moment the scrum approached, Murchison opened by saying he’s never done this before, and did not know whether or not he should sit or stand during his availability at his stall.
Once he got going, his smile only got bigger.
“I got called in by Coach Snowden in Lehigh. I was definitely a little bit nervous, but he let me know that I was getting the call up, and my heart was beating about 100 times per minute,” said the Flyers’ rookie.
“It’s extremely exciting,” the defenseman said. “It’s something I’ve dreamt about my entire life. I am extremely grateful to be here, preparing like all the other guys and hoping I can help the team as best as I can.”
Murchison said the first thing he did after getting the news was FaceTime his parents. He said he gets choked up thinking about getting called up. While his family does live in Arizona, Murchison did reveal that the Flyers said that when the time comes, his parents will be there for his debut. He also mentions he will have a “pretty big entourage of family and friends” at the game.
Murchison will make his debut on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. EST against the San Jose Sharks.
