They did it.

Again.

The Edmonton Oilers won their Western Conference semifinal against the Vegas Golden Knights, taking the best-of-7 series 4-1 to knock off the top dogs in the Pacific Division.

And now it’s onto the next, as the Oilers prepare to appear in their third conference final in the past four years.

But before they do, we need to take a moment to examine the results of our Round 2 online reader poll, where we asked our readers what they thought was going to happen in the series.

Here’s what they had to say:

1. With the betting odds and both teams fairly even, who has the advantage in Round 2?

Seventy-one per cent said the Oilers are turning it up right when they need to most. (Oh, yeah … and they also have Connor McDavid).

Just 16 per cent chose the Golden Knights, who had a more consistent regular season on their way to finishing with 110 points and have a deeper roster.

Twelve per cent said you might as well flip a coin.

2. Which player is going to score the most goals in the series?

This one is pretty cut and dry. Leon Draisaitl (two), Connor McDavid (one), Tomas Hertl (none), Jack Eichel (none) and Mark Stone (two) were the options. And no one had more than two, including Corey Perry, Evander Kane and Adam Henrique for Edmonton, and Reilly Smith and William Karlsson for Vegas, who were not on the list.

An overwhelming 82 per cent of respondents chose Draisaitl, who was fresh off a Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard trophy for leading the NHL with 52 goals in 71 games during the regular season. McDavid got the second-most votes at 10 per cent, and the trio of Golden Knights options split the remaining eight per cent. Edmonton scored 15 goals in the series compared to nine by Vegas.

3. Will Calvin Pickard’s performance remain on par, or will we end up seeing the return of Stuart Skinner to the crease against Vegas?

Turns out both choices were correct, as Pickard won Games 1 and 2 before getting sidelined by a lower-body injury, making way for the return of Stuart Skinner to Edmonton’s net, where he ended off the series in back-to-back shutouts.

Fifty-eight per cent of respondents were correct in predicting we haven’t seen the last of Skinner in these playoffs, while 30 per cent said Pickard will play the entire series. Twelve per cent decided it doesn’t really matter which goalie was in net, the way the Oilers are playing.

4. Who will win in the battle of the man-advantage in this series?

Vegas went 3-for-13 on the power play, while Edmonton was held to just one power-play goal in 11 opportunities. But the Oilers penalty kill heads into Round 3 having not surrendered a power-play goal in six chances over the past three games.

Fifty-one per cent of respondents were correct in predicting the five-on-five battle is going to far outweigh special teams in this series, as officials reach for their whistles less. Another 41 per cent guessed wrong in saying things have turned a corner for Edmonton’s power play. But at the same time, they were right in the second part of the response, which said McDavid and Draisaitl alone would counter the Golden Knights’ power-play productivity. (They combined for three goals in the series to equal the three power-play goals by Vegas).

Only eight per cent were wrong in predicting the Oilers penalty kill would be shaky in Round 2.

THE REST

Other questions saw 69 per cent of readers say the good side of what was a very ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ Evan Bouchard over the regular season would continue showing up for Round 2, while a 40 per cent majority chose Evander Kane as the player they would like to see step up even more in Round 2.

Jake Walman (37 per cent) and hometown product Brett Kulak (35 per cent) were chosen as the biggest contributors on defence in the playoffs amid the absence of injured veteran blue liner Mattias Ekholm (who, by the way, is on track for a potential return later on in Round 3).

But enough small talk. Let’s get to what everyone really wants to know. Who would win the series?

An overwhelming 55 per cent chose the Oilers to win in six, while the correct guess, Oilers in five, received 18 per cent of the votes — the same amount who chose Oilers in seven.

Prior to the puck dropping on Round 2, readers were asked just how far they think the Oilers will go in the post-season, and 59 per cent said all the way. Twenty-two per cent predicted a return trip to the Stanley Cup Final, 11 per cent chose Round 3 in a valiant effort, and eight per cent thought they wouldn’t make it past Vegas.

Lastly, if Edmonton fans had to chose between winning the Stanley Cup this year or be guaranteed McDavid would sign a contract extension in the off-season, 20 per cent chose McDavid, 19 per cent said Stanley Cups are the only thing that matters in the (former) City of Champions, and 61 per cent copped out and said both will happen anyway, so why choose?
