A new report appears to confirm that Calle Jarnkrok is officially done with the Maple Leafs and will be leaving the team.

Since losing Game 7 to the Florida Panthers this past May, Brad Treliving has been attempting to rid himself of two veteran forwards to create more cap and roster space, one of them being Calle Jarnkrok, and the other being David Kampf.

Kampf gone, but the Leafs still have too many forwards

Terminating Kampf’s contract freed up a roster spot and created an additional $1.25M in cap space as $1.15M of his $2.4M cap hit was buried in the AHL.

While ridding themselves of Kampf’s deal, Treliving has been unable to find a taker for another veteran forward in Calle Jarnkrok.

The reason the Leafs have been unable to trade Jarnkrok revealed

The Swedish native carries just a $2.1M cap hit for this season and is a serviceable bottom-six forward, as long as he stays healthy.

Normally, teams would be lining up to acquire a defensive forward who can score for such a low-end cost. However, teams have been hesitant to acquire Jarnkrok, and reports are now surfacing that he has elected to return to Sweden and join Brynas IF of the SHL.

The move is expected to take place at the end of the NHL season, almost certainly ending Jarnkrok’s NHL career and would allow the former second-round pick to end his playing career where it started.

While Jarnkrok has had a long NHL career, now in his 13th season in the league, injuries have hampered his ability to contribute consistently and has ultimately led to him being a 13th forward for the Leafs on most nights this season.
