The Toronto Maple Leafs added some goaltending insurance to their ranks by adding Brandon Bonello on a PTO amidst a flurry of injury concerns and call-ups.

On Wednesday evening, the Toronto Maple Leafs made sure they had some extra help in the crease by adding goaltender Brandon Bonello on a professional tryout, as it’s not there first time that Bonello has donned the blue and white.

Brandon Bonello returns to Maple Leafs as emergency goalie help

He was signed back then in order to help the team while Matt Murray was dealing with injuries, and brought him in as an emergency for their April 8th, 2023 game vs. Montreal.

The Maple Leafs brought him aboard now because of all the goaltending shuffling the team has had to do. With Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll out, the team has to rely on Dennis Hildeby and Artur Akhtyamov.

But that leaves the Marlies without a goaltender beyond Vyacheslav Peksa and Ken Appleby, with the latter currently also dealing with injury issues, necessitating Bonello’s signing.

He spent three years with the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL, posting a 3-13-2 record before spending an additional two seasons in Kingston with the Frontenacs posting an 11-49-4 record.

There is no official word or confirmation that the Marlies or the Maple Leafs are going to make Bonello a signing beyond a PTO, but he at least gets to suit up for a pro hockey team once again and may earn a deal depending on how Toronto’s injury issues play out.
