The Toronto Maple Leafs are dealing with some injury issues, and it has left the Toronto Marlies with a goaltending deficit that needs to be rectified.

Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz are injured, which means the Leafs had to pull from their AHL talent pool, and this has left the Marlies hurting for goaltending.

In order to rectify the situation and evaluate some potential options, the Marlies have decided to sign former Cincinnati Cyclones goaltender Brendan Bonello to a PTO.

The last time Bonello played at the professional level was with the Cyclones back in 2021-22. Since that time, he has bounced around AHL organizations without any playing time.

Regardless, he has remained on the Marlies’ radar, and they are looking to give him an opportunity to prove that he can play at the AHL level.

Whether or not he is able to accomplish that still remains to be seen. However, you cannot help but wish the kid all the best going forward.

Brendan Bonello’s playing history

Bonello previously played five seasons in the OHL where he split his time between the Saginaw Spirit and the Kingston Frontenacs.

He had a brief stint with York University in U Sports, but that only lasted a few games before he eventually moved on and went to the ECHL.

If one thing is for certain, it is that the Marlies need goaltenders right now, and it is the perfect time for Bonello to take a leap in his career.

Only time will tell whether or not he will be able to pull this off and get the biggest opportunity of his career.
