Detroit Red Wings top prospect, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, the first Norwegian-born player selected in the 1st-round is making a strong case for a call-up.

The forward has been playing in the AHL for 17 games this season, and has scored 14 points (5-9) as one of the Grand Rapids Griffins’ top forwards.

At nearly a point-per-game pace this season, MBN has found himself as a key piece in the team’s 3-2 victory over the Toronto Marlies on Sunday.

Brandsegg-Nygard’s fifth goal of the year came during the third period, breaking the tie in regulation, and he scored the game-winning goal.

Brandsegg-Nygard was selected 15th overall in the 1st-round of the 2024 NHL Draft.

The Red Wings placed enough faith in his abilities to make him the first Norwegian-born forward to be drafted in the 1st-round of the NHL draft.

He’s carrying the weight of expectations well in the AHL at the moment, and deserves another long look in the NHL.

Detroit Red Wings top prospect Michael Brandsegg-Nygard deserves a call-up

While Michael Brandsegg-Nygard found himself in a bottom-six role here in Detroit when he played 9 games at the start of the year, he scored 1 point (1 A).

In 17 games and nearly at a point-per-game pace, it’s not ridiculous to think that GM Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings will have to tap into the AHL for talent sooner or later, due to injury to Detroit’s top prospect. His name should be at the top of the list.
