Detroit Red Wings goaltender John Gibson got rowdy in a scrum with the Calgary Flames in their win on Wednesday night.

The Calgary Flames reside in a city in Canada, where hockey is sacred, and the territory is split between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers.

Alberta was rowdy Wednesday night, and not because of Connor McDavid, as the Red Wings were in town. The Red Wings at Flames matchup started off hot and ended in a torrent of fury.

The blowout the Flames experienced by a skilled Original Six team, showing up the once glorious franchise, caused tensions to flare.

Ryan Lomberg would step in, and chaos would ensue behind the Red Wings’ net with a group of players, including Patrick Kane and Albert Johansson, who would try to pull the players apart.

Devin Cooley would come all the way out to center ice, in shades of the Battle of Alberta’s past, but there would be no goalie tilt.

Detroit Red Wings Goaltender John Gibson engages in a scrum with the Calgary Flames

If there’s something we didn’t expect from John Gibson this season, in addition to a shutout, it was his ability to hold his own in a scrum, despite the burden of the equipment he wears.

We wouldn’t see a massive fight afterwards despite the tensions flaring between the two teams. Gibson’s play was excellent on Wednesday, and he proved he’s still more than a capable goaltender in the NHL.
