SALT LAKE CITY – After awkwardly colliding with the goal post in an attempt to score against the Vancouver Canucks last week, the Utah Mammoth reported on Thursday that Logan Cooley will be out a minimum of eight weeks with a lower body injury.

Here’s everything we know.

Logan Cooley our two months after sustaining leg injury in Vancouver

Late in the third period against the Vancouver Canucks, Cooley was held by defenseman Quinn Hughes as he worked his way towards the net and effectively established the inside lane.

Recognizing he was beaten, Hughes then held Cooley to avoid a Grade A scoring chance which caused 92 to collide with the post at a relatively high speed.

While he stayed down for a moment, Cooley was able to make his way to the bench under his own power and even returned to the ice on the ensuing power play.

However, with the game mostly secured, 92 was then held out of the final 3:09 in Vancouver and did not play against Calgary two days later.

The good news for the Mammoth and No. 92?

It is not a season ending injury.

The bad?

He will miss a minimum of eight weeks which likely means he will not play until after the Olympic break in late February.

What does Cooley’s injury mean for the Utah Mammoth?

Amidst a season full of adversity, Cooley’s injury comes at a difficult time for the Mammoth as they’ve only won six of their last 21 matchups and struggled to produce consistent offense.

Losing 92 doesn’t make things any easier as he was a critical piece of their top six with 14 goals and nine assists in 29 appearances.

So, where do they go from here?

They dig deep.

They replicate their most recent performance against the Panthers where they got bodies to the net, played with urgency, and matched a gritty style of offense.

If they’re able to do that and with a little bit of puck luck on their side, Utah should be able to survive until the new year when the schedule begins to favor them a considerable amount.

“Every team is going through adversity,” Head coach Andre Tourigny said. “It’s an opportunity for someone else to step up. Hayton is back in the lineup…But did good since he’s been called up. Next man up.”

Bottom line, Utah needs a next man up mentality as they approach these next eight weeks.

That means more from the likes of Clayton Keller, Dylan Guenther, Nick Schmaltz, Lawson Crouse, Jack McBain, Daniil But, etc. as they aim to simply stay above water.

If they can do that, they’ll still have a chance to make a push once Cooley is healthy.

If not, they’ll fall too far behind really quickly.
