The Flyers have been successful in tests against harder, tougher teams that typically are in the mix come playoff time. Thursday was no different, as the Flyers stayed with the Vegas Golden Knights for much of the night, forcing overtime.
But a mistake in the 3-on-3 was enough to allow the Golden Knights to quickly claim the game. Travis Konecny‘s turnover went to Jack Eichel, who then put a cross-ice feed to Mark Stone for his second of the game in a 3-2 overtime loss for the Flyers at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
The Golden Knights got on the board first at 6:07. A transition rush resulted in Zach Whitecloud getting a step and going to the backhand to beat Dan Vladar and make it 1-0 on his first of the season.
The Flyers tied the game at 16:11 of the period. A prolonged shift in the offensive zone ended with Travis Sanheim making a great backdoor pass to Trevor Zegras for the goal, his 11th of the season, to tie it at one.
Through 20 minutes, shots were 5-5.
Vegas got the lead back on a power play. Stone scored his fifth goal of the season at 12:53, beating Vladar on a rebound, to make it 2-1.
The Flyers answered back with 3:52 left in the period. Christian Dvorak set up Noah Juulsen for a big slap shot, and he scored his first goal since Feb. 17, 2024, to tie the game at two.
Through two periods, shots were 14-14.
The Flyers had a power play with 4:48 left in the third, but were not able to take advantage.
In overtime, Konecny whiffed on a pass and it allowed Vegas to claim possession. Seconds later, Eichel put a backdoor pass to the tape of Stone for the game-winning goal.
Stone and Eichel each had two points for Vegas. Dvorak had two assists for the Flyers.
Akira Schmid made 17 saves on 19 shots in the win. Vladar made 18 saves on 21 shots in the loss.
The Flyers close out the six-game homestand on Saturday night against the Carolina Hurricanes at 7 p.m.
