The Bruins lost defenseman Jonathan Aspirot (upper-body injury) after the first period and winger Viktor Arvidsson (lower body) after the second but still outplayed the speedy Jets (14-15-1).
It didn’t take long for things to get heated in the frigid True North — game time temperature 14 degrees.
Get Starting Point
A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.
Just three ticks in Mark Kastelic and Luke Schenn dropped the gloves for a heavyweight battle at center ice. Both landed some solid rights before being sent to the box.
It was a rematch of a bout Kastelic dominated last season when Schenn was with the Predators.
Charlie McAvoy, playing for the first time in nearly a month, found himself in the thick of things right away. Unfortunately for him, he was bagged for a tripping call early on. The Bruins survived it, however.
Morgan Barron gave Winnipeg the lead when he dug out a rebound of a Josh Morrissey slapper past Joonas Korpisalo.
The Bruins then blitzed the Jets for three goals in three minutes, including a pair of power-play snipes.
David Pastrnak struck first, zapping one from the right circle over Eric Comrie’s blocker at 8:24. McAvoy and Morgan Geekie picked up helpers on Pastrnak’s 12th goal of the season.
Casey Mittelstadt gave the Bruins their first lead, popping home a power-play goal off a cross-slot feed from Mason Lohrei at 10:28.
Sean Kuraly capped the outburst, settling a bouncing puck with his glove in the slot before getting Comrie to commit and then lifting a backhander to the top shelf at 11:08.
The Jets staunched the bleeding and cut the deficit to 3-2 when Alex Iafallo got a step on Lohrei and cut to the net before lifting one over Korpisalo and under the crossbar at 13:37.
The Bruins were hit with back-to-back late penalties (Elias Lindholm for tripping and Geekie for holding) but were able to kill both, the latter of which carried over to the start of the second.
The Bruins were forced to play the final 40 minutes with just five defensemen after Jonathan Aspirot was lost for the night with an upper-body injury.
Kuraly had a prime chance to get his second of the night, but Comrie squeezed his point-blank bid in the early going of the middle period that ended with the Bruins holding a 4-3 advantage.
Korpisalo was brilliant for the Bruins, holding the fort as the Jets pressed. Korpisalo made nifty saves on Gustav Nyquist, Jonathan Toews, and Cole Koepke.
The Bruins took a brief two-goal lead when Hampus Lindholm stepped into a one-timer just inside the blue line and snuck it past Comrie just inside the near post.
Lindholm’s second goal of the season was the eighth from a Bruins defenseman this season. Pastrnak picked up the primary assist, giving him five points in the two games since returning from an injury.
Andrew Peeke was called for a questionable interference penalty late and the Jets made it hurt, with Gabriel Vilardi jamming home a rebound at the post.
Winnipeg had gone 0 for 18 on the power-play before Vilardi’s goal.
