ROCHESTER — Joseph Villarama and Gavin Clark were still in middle school the last time that Mayo beat Century in a boys hockey game.

The now-Mayo juniors were both eighth-graders on Jan. 25, 2023, when the Spartans earned a 5-1 victory against the Panthers at Graham Arena 4.

The rivals met again on Thursday night, this time across the hall at Graham Arena 1, Mayo’s home ice. And Villarama and Clark came up big in the first matchup between the intra-city rivals this season.

Both of the juniors scored a pair of goals — including the game’s first goal, by Villarama, 4:39 in, and the game-winner by Clark in the second period — as Mayo beat Century/John Marshall 5-2 in a Big Nine Conference boys hockey game.

The win snaps a six-game winless streak for Mayo against Century, dating back to that game in 2023. Century was 5-0-1 against its rival since that night.

This time, Mayo didn’t trail.

Villarama followed up his opening goal with his second of the night at the 11:52 mark of the first period, giving Mayo a 2-0 lead after one period. Holland Christopherson and Ethan Daniels assisted once each on the first-period goals.

Clark extended the Spartans lead to 3-0 in the second period, with an assist from Fionn Pittock, at the 9:38 mark.

Century/JM got on the board 3:30 into the third, when Dominic Palazzari scored with an assist from Boston Collins.

Clark answered with his second of the night, to extend Mayo’s lead to 4-1, just 51 seconds later.

Century/JM tried to get back in it, as Bennett Timpane pulled the Panthers within 4-2 on a goal midway through the third.

But Mayo sealed the win with an Ethan Daniels goal with 32 seconds remaining.

Colton Brandt made 24 saves for Mayo, to earn the win in his first-ever cross-town rivalry game. Zach Bohan stopped 31 shots for Century/JM, as Mayo outshot it 36-26.

Century/JM (1-2-0 Big Nine, 3-4-0 overall) hosts Owatonna at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Mayo (2-1-0, 3-3-0) hosts Duluth Marshall at 7 p.m. Friday.
