The Detroit Red Wings’ five-game points streak came to an end as they lost in 4-1 regulation to the Edmonton Oilers tonight in the second-to-last game of their road trip. After nearly squandering a four-goal lead against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night, the Red Wings came out skating and playing better, but ultimately left without a new notch in the win column.
Zach Hyman led the Oilers with a hat-trick against the Red Wings, thanks in part to a four-assist night from Connor McDavid to get Edmonton the win over Detroit on home ice.
“Connor willed his team to a win tonight,” Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin told reporters after the game. “If you’re not on your toes and you’re not ready, he’s going to make you pay, and he made us pay tonight.”
Frozen Feet
Detroit goalie Cam Talbot came into the game against the Oilers in something of a homecoming, having earned 104 wins on ice with Edmonton in his career. However, he wouldn’t get in the win column in his first action of Detroit’s road trip. The Red Wings certainly didn’t do him any favors, whether that was getting on the back foot in the power play or acting as the screen for the other team.
It was a quiet first period, with eight minutes elapsing before the first whistle was blown. Patrick Kane was called for hooking late in the period, and after that, Hyman opened up scoring with a little over five and a half minutes left in the first on a power play goal. The Oilers dominated possession off puck drop in the second period, and Albert Johansson got too far into Talbot’s crease, allowing Matthias Ekholm’s slap shot to fly right by the 37-year-old goalie’s blind spot.
The Red Wings would get one back with a goal from Simon Edvinsson. Edvinsson was questionable for the game with a lower-body injury suffered last night against Calgary after blocking a shot with his foot.
Good, but not enough
After the Edvinsson goal, the Red Wings had a few extended possessions in the Oilers’ zone and a power play, but none led to any points.
The Oilers did not have that problem.
Hyman’s second goal of the night came in after one of the Red Wings’ extended possession periods, flipping the ice and driving in to get a shot after the Red Wings’ defense got out of position. The Red Wings ended the second period on the penalty kill down 3-1, and on the back foot. However, there was still the opportunity to come back. They just weren’t good enough to take it.
The Red Wings pulled Talbot with three minutes left in the game and were not able to keep possession of the puck, ultimately letting Hyman get his third goal of the night into the empty net to seal the game with 1:17 left. The Red Wings saw their road winning streak come to an abrupt halt in Edmonton.
“We made a few critical mistakes,” Detroit coach Todd McLellan said. “We backed into our goaltender on the second one, and on the third one, we got two d-men that did a pretty good job tonight, but they left the net front alone. And you can’t give that team those types of opportunities.”
