The Penguins traded Tristan Jarry and Sam Poulin to the Oilers in exchange for goaltender Stuart Skinner, left-handed defenseman Brett Kulak and a 2029 second-round pick. The Penguins did not retain any salary in the move.
Skinner, 27, is in the final year of his contract that carries a $2.6 million cap hit. He’s 11-8-4 this season with a 2.83 goals-against average, .891 save percentage and two shutouts.
Kulak, 31, is also in the final year of his contract that has a $2.75 million cap hit. He has two assists and is a minus-7 in 31 games this season.
With Edmonton taking on Jarry’s entire $5.375 million cap hit, the difference is the Penguins shedding $25,000 in cap space.
Poulin, 24, was Wilkes-Barre’s leading scorer with nine goals and 11 assists in 22 games at the AHL level. He was scoreless in two NHL games this season.
The Penguins play the Oilers on Tuesday.
The Penguins were at the 23-man roster limit prior to the trade, so with one NHL-rostered player going out and two coming in, an additional move is needed to get compliant.
