International hockey is set to take center stage once again with the Olympic Games in Milan getting underway in less than eight weeks. A bunch of Golden Knights are set to participate, and the United States will get its revenge on Canada and bring home the gold medal.
Then, the focus will turn to the next international event, the 2028 World Cup of Hockey. An expanded version of last year’s 4 Nations tournament, the NHL-controlled event will take place in one of 16 cities in North America and Europe. The best city on the planet is one of them. (Sweeping opinions everyone should agree on equal facts in this article.)
We’ve put our name in the hat for the World Cup, in partnership with the LVCVA. We feel pretty good about that. –John Penhollow, Golden Knights president of business operations on VGK Insider Show
Las Vegas appears to have a great shot.
(Vegas) makes a lot of sense for what the league and NHLPA are going for. –Elliotte Friedman, 32 Thoughts on Sportsnet.ca
Friedman noted though that historically, the league tries to avoid cities in Western North America because of the added travel coming from Europe.
The decision is expected to be made shortly before or after the Olympics.
In other news, the Golden Knights could be moving out of City National Arena in the near future. The facility is not even 10 years old, but the idea of building a new one is being floated.
It’s a real idea but it’s an idea that takes time. It might take two, two and a half years, to build something. You’ve gotta find the right spot for it. You have to make sure all the key stakeholders that are around the room and can raise their hand and say what they need from it if it were to happen. –Penhollow, Golden Knights president of business operations on VGK Insider Show
Penhollow says a new facility would complement City National Arena.
You take the best parts of CNA, the best parts of AFC (America First Center), the best parts of LFF (Lee’s Family Forum), and you could design something that’s more for the NHL team in the future, and we still use CNA for some absolutely great programming. –Penhollow, Golden Knights president of business operations on VGK Insider Show
It’s not because City National Arena is already obsolete; instead, it’s an opportunity to upgrade.
This original idea came up from the fact that we just don’t have enough ice. It would be multiple sheets. It could be multiple sports. It could be multiple aspects that are beyond the sport of hockey. If we’re going to build it, design it in a way that could have two or three purposes behind it. –Penhollow, Golden Knights president of business operations on VGK Insider Show
