The struggle to win at home continues to loom over the University of Vermont men’s hockey team. The Catamounts were unable to follow up their road win against the previously ranked Boston University Terriers on Saturday, Dec. 6, losing in a 3-0 shutout loss at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Saturday, Dec. 13, against the Army Black Knights.”Disappointed in our game tonight,” said Vermont men’s hockey head coach Steve Wiedler. “We didn’t meet the standard in a lot of areas. Everything we showed at the BU weekend, we didn’t show tonight.”This marks Vermont’s fourth straight loss at home inside Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Catamounts’ last win at home was back on their first home game of the season on Friday, Oct. 10, against St. Lawrence University. “We got to turn that around for the second half for sure,” Wiedler said. “It’s a competitive advantage for us. Maybe there’s pressure associated with this young group. Maybe we just got to find a little more inside of there in terms of pride and that kind of thing that would help set us up for success.”JJ Cataldo picked up the shutout win in the net for Army, despite Vermont winning the shot battle in this contest 22-11. Weidler shared that minimal effort from his team to work for goals is what led his Catamounts to not put in a single goal against the Black Knights. “Our struggles on offense were evident again tonight,” Wiedler said. “The honest truth of it was we weren’t even moving our feet tonight, we had some breakaways, we do a decent job of creating odd matchups, but we don’t finish on them. I think that our offensive woes are all tied into our effort.”Army found its first goal of the game in the second period by Vincent Salice, but Vermont surrendered its highest number of goals against them in the third period. The Ivey twins, Ben Ivey and Jack Ivey, scored back-to-back goals less than four minutes apart from each other. “I hated our third period, down a goal at home, one-goal game,” Wieder said. “The break coming up for us is much needed. Go home, recalibrate yourself on what’s your why. Why are you even here? Sometimes being around the ones you love can help you redefine that for yourself.”The Catamounts will look to reset after their holiday break with four straight games at Gutterson Fieldhouse. They will start that home stretch on Monday, Dec. 29, at 6 p.m. against Hockey East foe Merrimack College.
