After 65 minutes, the Flyers had the Carolina Hurricanes right where they wanted them, right? A shootout, where the Flyers were 5-0 on the season, had started to feel automatic.

But Trevor Zegras was stopped for the first time in the shootout this season, and the lone goal of the skills competition went to Jackson Blake, as the Hurricanes secured a 4-3 decision over the Flyers on Saturday night.

The Flyers got off to a good start, opening up a 2-0 lead in the first. Bobby Brink finished off a chance from the high slot for his eighth goal of the season at 10:04. Zegras scored his 12th of the season with 2:26 remaining in the period on a nice feed from Travis Konecny.

Through 20 minutes, shots were 7-5 Flyers.

Carolina finally broke through at 9:11 of the second. Nikolaj Ehlers finished off a transition rush after a turnover, cutting the lead to one with his eighth of the season.

At 14:12, the game was tied, as Alexander Nikishin’s shot went off the skate of Noah Cates and in to make it 2-2.

Through two periods, shots were 16-13 Flyers.

The Hurricanes grabbed the lead for the first time with 7:34 to play in the third. Seth Jarvis got behind the defense and made a nice move for his 18th goal of the season. But just 23 seconds later, the Flyers produced a two-on-one and Carl Grundstrom scored his second of the season to make it 3-3.

That forced overtime, where neither team was able to score. In the shootout, Zegras, Matvei Michkov, Konecny, and Brink were all stopped. Blake scored in the fourth round to end the game.

Sam Ersson made 18 saves on 21 shots in the loss. Pyotr Kochetkov made 15 saves on 18 shots in the win.

Zegras had a multi-point game for the Flyers. Shayne Gostisbehere had two assists for Carolina.

The two teams meet again on Sunday evening at 5 p.m. in Carolina.
