LIVONIA – It was a battle of longtime rivals at the annual Adam Mitchell KLAA-MIHL Hockey Showcase early Saturday evening at Eddie Edgar Arena when Trenton took on Livonia Stevenson.

After starting the year a perfect 8-0, Trenton came into the big matchup having hit a bit of a slump in the last week and, unfortunately, the woes continued through the weekend.

After taking an early lead, special teams struggles ensued as four unanswered goals from the Spartans of Stevenson resulted in a 5-2 loss for the local Trojans.

It is the first three-game losing streak for Trenton – one where they have been outscored 17-7 – since the 2021-22 season.

“It was a tough one,” Trenton coach Chad Clements said. “Five-on-five I thought we played okay, but special teams killed us. We allowed four power play goals and you’re not going to win too many games with that.”

It was an encouraging start to the evening for Trenton, who led two different times throughout the night, including the game’s first goal midway through the first period.

With 8:34 to go, junior Oliver Pidcock – who would go on to be named team MVP of the showcase – snuck one through traffic for his first goal of the year and a 1-0 Trojans lead that held through the first intermission.

The showcase hosts from Stevenson tied it up less than 30 seconds into the middle stanza for what would be their lone even-strength goal of the night. Trenton, however, was able to answer back and reclaim a one-score lead.

With 8:24 left in the second, it was Ethan Gilbert at the net cashing in for the 2-1 Trenton advantage on the power play, with help from Zach Lamay and Brett Allen.

From there, the special teams struggles started for the locals.

Stevenson scored back-to-back goals just over a minute apart, the first of which coming with 2:50 left in the second on the power play, just seconds after playing with a 5-on-3 advantage.

A little over a minute later, with another power play opportunity, what would stand as the game-winner was netted to give the Spartans their first lead of the evening after two periods of play.

In the third, the hosts added two more. They scored on the power play just a minute in before capping things with 4:46 to play.

In between those third-period goals, Trenton had 70 seconds of their own two-man advantage, but were unable to capitalize.

“We have to get better on our penalty kill and we’ve gotta score,” Clements said. “I know we had one power play goal, but we’ve gotta take advantage of our opportunities as well.”

The loss puts the Trojans’ last win against Grandville at the West Michigan Showcase back on December 5.

“We’re on a little bit of a skid here, so we’ve gotta stay positive and just keep working,” Clements said. “I think everyone’s tense right now because of that, thinking about it in their minds and you’ve just got to play the game that they always play and work through it.

“We had our chances, we just didn’t bury them.”

UP NEXT

Trenton will head back to practice with a week off before they return to game action next weekend when they head up north to the upper peninsula.

The Trojans will first visit Calumet on Friday, Dec 19 before trekking over to Houghton a day later.

“Sometimes when things aren’t going your way, they’re not going your way and you’ve just got to work through them and continue to work,” Clements said. “We’ve gotta play better defensively and we’ve gotta take care of our zone- all five guys.

“Not just the defense, but all five guys.”
