The well-known Pierre LeBrun has just confirmed the bad news for Montreal Canadiens goaltender Samuel Montembeault.
LeBrun first announced that all players who took part in the 4 Nations Face-Off to represent Canada are still being considered for a roster spot with Team Canada for the 2026 Olympic Games.
Bad news confirmed for Samuel Montembeault: he would officially no longer be considered by Team Canada
It’s not the surprise of the year, but it is still a major disappointment for Montembeault, who had what was practically a guaranteed spot just a few months ago (back in August).
We’re extremely disappointed for him, even if this was a confirmation that was becoming inevitable.
“Team Canada management group has wrapped up 3 days of meetings. GM Doug Armstrong says the list of players still in mix now down to the “low 30s.”
Everyone from 4 Nations roster still in mix. Will use next 3 weeks before Dec. 31 deadline to make those final, difficult decisions.”

The “I would imagine not no” part hurts, let’s be honest.
It is therefore indeed possible that there will be absolutely no Quebecers at the 2026 Olympic Games.
Samuel Montembeault, 29 years old, has a 5-6-1 record this season, with a 3.65 goals-against average and an .857 save percentage.
At this point, all we can hope for is that he becomes the goaltender he was last season for the Montreal Canadiens.
They’re going to need him, even if young Jacob Fowler has been impressive so far.
