• GOAL: John Klingberg wins it in OT. Unreal collapse.
• Three minutes left in OT. Penguins have the only shot so far.
• Overtime. Yikes.
• That’s four goals in 10:49. Yep.
• GOAL: It’s tied. Tyler Toffoli dives iforward in the slot for a loose puck and puts it in. Penguins 5, Sharks 5
• Sharks have the last nine shots.
• GOAL: It’s a one-goal game. Macklin Celebrini with a slapshot through traffic with 2:27 left. Penguins 5, Sharks 4
• Sharks pull Yaroslav Askarov for the 6-on-5.
• GOAL: Scramble in front of the Penguins’ net, Artutrs Silovs dives to make the save and the Sharks’ like, fourth whack at it goes in. William Eklund with the goal. Penguins 5, Sharks 3
• Shots are up to 42-20. Not bad.
• GOAL: John Klingberg scores on the power play with a shot from the slot. Penguins 5, Sharks 2
• Penguins to the PK. Connor Dewar for hooking.
• GOAL: Anthony Mantha on the power play, goes to the net and pops the puck in from the crease. Penguins 5, Sharks 1
• Looks like Parker Wotherspoon lost a tooth? Or just has a really messed up lip. Hard to tell.
• Parker Wotherspoon with a big hit on Will Smith, Macklin Celebrini comes flying in and throws a couple of punches but it doesn’t turn into anything. Celebrini gets four for roughing, Wotherspoon gets two for roughing.
• Penguins to the PK with 17:05 left. Ryan Graves gets two for holding.
• Parker Wotherspoon is on the ice for the start of the third.
• End of the second. Penguins lead 4-1 off of goals from Sidney Crosby, Rutger McGroarty, Kevin Hayes, Bryan Rust. Parker Wotherspoon never came back from the puck to the mouth.
• GOAL: Bryan Rust scores with 6.6 left in the period on the power play, a one-timer from the left circle. Sidney Crosby with the assist to move with three points of the record. Penguins 4, Sharks 1
• Penguins get a power play with 1:41 left in the second. Dmitry Orlov high-sticked Sidney Crosby. He was checking for blood, but it’s just a two-minute minor.
• Still no sign of Parker Wotherspoon, by the way. Defense is rotating.
• Parker Wotherspoon heads town the tunnel. Puck hit him in the face. Wasn’t a hard shot, a few guys were battling for a puck and it deflected off a stick and up into his face.
• Penguins have a 23-9 lead in shots with 9:41 left in the first.
• GOAL: Kevin Hayes with a redirect in front of the net, set up by his childhood buddy Noel Acciari. Maybe a good thing to have those two together. Hayes immediately points to Acciari in recognition, then to the sky like always. Penguins 3, Sharks 1
• Philipp Kurashev just crashed hard into the boards and is hurt. Looked like maybe his wrist or arm? He was holding something around there. Sitting on the bench with a San Jose athletic trainer.
• Sidney Crosby has five of the Penguins’ 17 shots.
• Big save from Arturs Silovs on a partial breakaway from Barclay Goodrow.
• Some Sweden-Finland violence here. William Eklund and Ville Koivunen shoving each other around in a scrum and chirping.
• Kris Letang’s secondary assist on the last goal was his 787th point of his career, tying Borje Salming for the 21st-most of a defenseman in NHL history. I remember a couple of seasons ago Erik Karlsson surpassed Salming in something and I was asking him about it after, Marcus Pettersson overheard and stood up and shook his hand. It’s a big deal.
• Another power play for the Penguins with 17:45 left. Nick Leddy gets two for hooking.
• GOAL: Rutger McGroarty with his first of the year. Ben Kindel set it up. Long-range shot from back above the left circle. He was FIRED up after that. Big “LET’S F–KING GO” from him after. Penguins 2, Sharks 1
• Second period is underway.
• The new second line of Rutger McGroarty, Ben Kindel, Justin Brazeau has an expected goals share of exactly 0% in their first period together, despite producing two shots on goal.
• End of the first period, it’s tied 1-1. Goals from Tyler Toffoli and Sidney Crosby. Penguins lead 13-6 in shots.
• Sidney Crosby with a shot in the last 10 seconds of the first, Yaroslav Askarov gloves it away.
• Nothing on the power play. Will Smith gets a breakaway out of the penalty box and Arturs Silovs makes the save.
• Top power play now is Erik Karlsson, Sidney Crosby, Bryan Rust, Anthony Mantha and Rickard Rakell with Rakell back. Ben Kindel got bumped. He also got elevated to the second line and kills penalties, so could be a matter of managing his minutes.
• Penguins are getting another power play with 4:59 left in the first. Hooking call on Will Smith. Sharks don’t have a shot on goal since their goal.
• Back to full strength.
• Anthony Mantha gets two for cross-checking and Tyler Toffoli two for slashing with 7:08 left in the first. It’ll be four-on-four.
• GOAL: Sidney Crosby ties it eight seconds into the power play, going to the net and putting in a rebound. Four points now from the franchise record. Mario Lemieux is in the building. Penguins 1, Sharks 1
• Penguins to the power play with 7:27 left. Macklin Celebrini gets two for tripping Ville Koivunen.
• Delayed penalty coming on San Jose.
• GOAL: Tyler Toffoli capitalizes on the Sharks’ fifth shot of the game with a shot from near the blue line. Beat Arturs Silovs blocker-side. Sharks 1, Penguins 0
• And Ville Koivunen is already back. Crisis averted.
• There goes Ville Koivunen. He just hobbled his way to the locker room.
• Ville Koivunen is limping in the tunnel but hasn’t gone down yet. Seemingly shaking it off.
• Oof. Ville Koivunen blocks a shot and is hurting, his right foot. He was stuck out there and finished his shift. Arturs Silovs froze the puck and he could get off.
• Yeah, Arturs Silovs is just not conceding rebounds anymore.
• Penguins kill the penalty and Connor Clifton is a free man.
• Connor Clifton takes a hooking penalty with 13:41 left in the first. Penguins to the PK.
• Arturs Silovs was as fired up as I’ve ever seen him yesterday. He had a good relationship with Tristan Jarry, they liked each other. But he has somewhat of a rivalry with Stuart Skinner — nothing bad, just a competitive spirit from their time going up against each other when Silovs was with Vancouver. He seemed really excited to have him here and battle with each other. The trade could be really good for him.
• Arturs Silovs stops and freezes the Sharks’ second shot, too.
• Arturs Silovs makes a pad save on the Sharks’ first shot of the game, and covers it. His rate of rebounds conceded has been going down over the course of the season.
• Random thought I had yesterday, by the way: Yesterday’s trade frees up No. 22, Ben Kindel’s number that he wears for Canada. Wonder if he’ll change next season.
• Penguins have the game’s firs three shots through five minutes.
• Anthony Mantha sets up Tommy Novak for a shot off the rush in the new third line’s first shift. Easy pad save.
• Happy 100th NHL game to Ryan Shea, by the way. Went unsigned by the Blackhawks after they drafted him, grinded it out in the minors for three years with Dallas before the Stars chose to let him walk too, and he managed to become a regular in the lineup here. He’s been a cool story.
• This is underway.
• Nicole Jenkins, a voice professor at Duquesne and an opera singer, did the anthem. Actually heard the crowd gasp and applaud a few times throughout, she was good.
• Quick work from the video production staff to take Tristan Jarry out of the pregame hype video.
• Big applause from the fans when Michelle Crechiolo tells the people about Rickard Rakell playing in the pregame setup video.
• Sharks’ lines and parings:
Philipp Kurashev – Macklin Celebrini – Will Smith
Collin Graf – Alexander Wennberg – Tyler Toffoli
William Eklund – Ty Dellandrea – Jeff Skinner
Barclay Goodrow – Adam Gaudette – Ryan Reaves
Dmitry Orlov – John Klingberg
Mario Ferraro – Nick Leddy
Sam Dickinson – Vincent Iorio
• Noted goal-scorer Alex Nedeljkovic took a shot at the Penguins’ net toward the end up warmups, it went just wide. Throwback to when he scored his third career pro goal in Wilkes-Barre, and I asked after if he had plans for a display for his goal pucks. He said he didn’t want to build one for three, and then end up needing room for nine by the end of his career. Then he scored his fourth pro goal (and first in the NHL) in Buffalo. He’s going to keep trying.
• Penguins’ lines and pairings vs. Sharks. The kid line is broken up, but it’s because Rutger McGroarty and Ben Kindel are elevated to the second line. Danton Heinen is the odd man out with Rickard Rakell back:
Rickard Rakell – Sidney Crosby – Bryan Rust
Rutger McGroarty – Ben Kindel – Justin Brazeau
Ville Koivunen – Tommy Novak – Anthony Mantha
Connor Dewar – Kevin Hayes – Noel Acciari
Parker Wotherspoon – Erik Karlsson
Ryan Shea – Kris Letang
Ryan Graves – Connor Clifton
• Obligatory reminder for tonight and Tuesday: For the last decade, the minimum requirement the Penguins have had for a former player to earn a tribute video in a return is winning a Cup. So don’t expect anything.
