Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin gave his take on Friday evening when meeting with reporters on whether or not the organization has a culture problem.

Tension is at an all-time high in Vancouver after the Canucks made the decision to trade captain Quinn Hughes on Friday night, with Patrik Allvin landing several key assets in return, most notably centerman Marco Rossi and defenseman Zeev Buium.

“Like Jim, I would also like to thank Quinn for everything thing he has done in Vancouver. Quinn played hard, lead by example and did a lot of very good things for the Canucks. Trading away a player of this caliber is never easy and easy decision to make, but it was one we had to do to make our team better. We are so excited to add a solid centre in Marco, a good young blueliner in Zeev and a versatile forward in Liam. This year’s draft is a strong one so acquiring a first-round pick was also a big part of this deal.” Patrik Allvin said.

The last 12 months have been frustrating for the organization with the reported feud between Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller that led to the latter being traded to the New York Rangers, the departure of Rick Tocchet and now, dealing away one of the greatest players this franchise has ever seen.

Patrik Allvin gives his take on if Vancouver Canucks have a culture problem

During Friday night’s media availability, Jason Brough of Sportsnet 650’s Halford and Brough in the morning, who was clearly frustrated with the organization, asked Patrik Allvin if they have a culture problem which has led to the departure of J.T. Miller, Rick Tocchet and yesterday, Quinn Hughes.

Allvin laughed the question off a bit, saying that he doesn’t believe the organization has a culture problem at all and that wasn’t the reason for trading Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild.

He added that the organization as a whole, including the front office, are excited with the team’s current leadership group, which consists of Tyler Myers, Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson, Conor Garland and presumably Filip Hronek now, and that they like what Head Coach Adam Foote is building.

“Yeah, I mean you had a big fight between two of your leaders in J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson, one of them had to be traded. You had a Head Coach that decided not to leave and now had a captain that didn’t want to stay. Do you have a culture problem?” Brough said.

Allvin replied with, “I don’t believe so. I don’t believe that’s the reason why Quinn Hughes is traded here today. And I have a lot of respect for J.T. Miller as well for what he went through last year on the personal side, which as an organization respect a lot. We’re very excited with the leadership and with what Adam [Foote] is building here. The players we got in through the draft over the last couple of years and how they integrated with our team here.”

That frustration is only going to grow in the months ahead, especially if the Canucks remain in the NHL’s basement, which will lead to questions on whether or not the organization needs change at the top and if Jim Rutherford & Patrik Allvin are the right people to guide this team through a rebuild.
