Sunday evening, Martin St-Louis began his press conference with a chilling piece of news.
Before talking about the Montreal Canadiens’ victory over the Edmonton Oilers, the head coach wanted to address the tragedy that occurred at Brown University, where his son Ryan studies.
St-Louis specified that his son was not injured, while explaining that he had been forced to shelter in place during the incident.
“My son goes to Brown University. He’s a senior. He was at campus yesterday. So he was sheltering during last night’s game. It’s a tragedy, it hit home. I want to send my thoughts and prayers to everybody involved: the students, the families, that community. Stuff like that shouldn’t happen. He’s safe, he’s back home. It was a difficult time for everyone.
– Martin St-Louis on the Brown tragedy
What we know so far is that a shooting broke out in a university building in the United States, that one person was injured, and that a suspect was arrested by authorities.
The rest of the details evolved quickly over the course of the hours, but the core of the situation remains heavy and troubling.
You can watch the full press conference here:
Ryan St-Louis, 22, is a forward with Brown’s hockey team. This season, he has recorded 6 points in 12 games, including 4 goals and 2 assists.
When your father is behind the Canadiens’ bench and your life is turned upside down hundreds of miles away, it puts everything into perspective.
At the opening of the press conference, Martin St-Louis shares a tragedy that occurred in his son’s circle
On the ice, the Canadiens still got the job done, winning 4-1 against the Edmonton Oilers at the Bell Centre.
Ivan Demidov, Joe Veleno, Nick Suzuki, and Alexandre Texier found the back of the net, while Jakub Dobes stopped 27 shots. Lane Hutson and Juraj Slafkovsky each recorded two assists in the game.
Credit to Martin St-Louis for taking the time to address the situation after the game and for expressing his support and compassion for those directly impacted.
He did not try to put on a show. He simply took a minute to speak as a father, not just as the Canadiens’ head coach.
We encourage everyone to keep the victims and all those affected by this tragedy in their thoughts.
