General manager Tom Fitzgerald has the “full support” of Devils owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer and his job is not in jeopardy, a team source told NJ Advance Media Monday. The person requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation.

Anything can happen if the Devils miss the playoffs or fail to go on a deep playoff run, but as of now, the fifth-year general manager is considered safe. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman first reported on 32 Thoughts that he didn’t “believe” Fitzgerald was “in trouble.”

This update comes amid one of the rockiest months of Fitzgerald’s tenure in New Jersey. Despite sitting in first place for most of October and early November, Fitzgerald’s Devils are now outside the playoff picture and have a 6-10-0 record since superstar center Jack Hughes injured his hand on Nov. 13. The team has faced a brutal rash of injuries — they rank third in man games lost to injury, according to NHL injury viz — but that doesn’t excuse Fitzgerald’s widely-criticized moves (or lack thereof).

On Oct. 31, Fitzgerald handed 35-year-old goaltender Jacob Markstrom — who was struggling up until that point — a two-year extension worth $12 million and no-trade protection in both years. Markstrom’s stats this season? An abysmal .874 save percentage and a 3.56 goals-against average.

Fitzgerald also failed to trade for star defenseman Quinn Hughes — the older brother of Devils stars Jack and Luke — who was dealt to the Minnesota Wild on Friday. Friedman revealed that the Devils couldn’t clear the cap space needed for a potential Quinn trade due to “clauses that were honestly and fairly negotiated that prevented them from doing what they needed to do to open up spots.”

NJ Advance Media looked at each team’s PuckPedia page and found that the Devils have a staggering 15 players with no-trade/no-movement clauses on their current/pending contracts, which is tied with the Carolina Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers for the most in the NHL.

Let’s see if Fitzgerald can sort these issues out before things grow dire. The Devils face a tough stretch of road games against the Golden Knights and Mammoth this week.
