In the American Hockey League’s 90-year history, no team has been better than the 2025-26 Grand Rapids Griffins in the first 24 games of a season.

The Griffins used late-game heroics again to beat the Chicago Wolves 2-1 in a shootout to raise their record to 22-1-0-1. That betters the previous mark of 2005-06 Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins (20-1-2-1).

Trailing 1-0 in third period, the Griffins tied the game 1-1 on Jakub Rychlovsky’s goal with 1:12 left in regulation.  The Griffins dominated overtime with seven shots on goal. However, they needed a shootout goal from John Leonard to win. The Red Wings called up Leonard after the game.

Carter Gylander (GUY-lander) was named the No. 1 star after he posted 28 saves (plus all three shots in the shootout) to raise his Griffins’ record to 5-0-1. He owns a 1.833 GAA and a .936 save percentage.
