VIDEO: When it comes to public safety, the Grand Rapids Fire Department and the Grand Rapids Police Department are on the same team. However, when the puck hits the ice, the competition between the two departments is fierce. On Saturday afternoon, they traded badges for hockey sticks, battling it out on the ice for a good cause, raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“It’s a great time for the fire department and police department, who are kind of like siblings, to get together and bond, but also have a nice, friendly but serious competition,” said Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom. “It’s for a good cause but we still want to win.”

This was their fifth hockey game at the Van Andel Arena and the community showed up loud and proud. “A really spirited bunch of people came out today, a lot of cheering, a lot of fans,” said Grand Rapids Fire Chief Brad Brown.
