The St. Louis Blues claimed forward Jonatan Berggren on waivers Tuesday, ending his time with the Detroit Red Wings.

GM Steve Yzerman put Berggren on waivers Monday, the day after the Red Wings promoted forward John Leonard. Tonight, Leonard will take Patrick Kane’s spot on a line with Alex DeBrincat and Andrew Copp.

The Blues are getting a forward who has scored 31 goals in 169 NHL games. As a rookie in 2022-23, Berggren managed to register 15 goals and 13 assists for 28 points. But he wasn’t able to build on that impressive start.

“Bergey’s a real good hockey player,” McLellan said earlier today. “He’s a good human being. And when opportunity dries up in one spot, you got to think about the individual a little bit too, and maybe he’ll get an opportunity. “

Berggren has been a healthy scratch more than he’s played this season. In 15 games, Berggren two goals and four assists for six points.

“He’s an offensive producing player (who) probably hasn’t produced enough offense when we put him in the lineup,” McLellan said. “He’s been somewhat reliable though, defensively and sometimes these things just happen.”

The Blues, hit hard by injuries this season, are clearly hoping that Berggren’s scoring touch can help them score more goals St. Louis ranks 30th in the with a 2.53 goals-per-game average. The Red Wings, by comparison, are averaging 3.09 goals per game.

Recently, the Blues signed former Red Wings player Robby Fabbri to join their forward group. Former Detroit players Pius Suter, Oskar Sundqvist and Matt Luff are also the team.

In 2023-24, Berggren tallied 24 goals and totaled 56 points in 53 games playing for the Grand Rapids Griffins.
