San Jose Sharks forward Igor Chernyshov will make his NHL debut on Tuesday against the Calgary Flames.
The Sharks prospect will play on the top line with Macklin Celebrini and Collin Graf. Chernyshov is a Russian-born player, and although his English is improving, he was somewhat limited in answers. With translation help provided by Sharks d-man Shakir Mukhamadullin, Chernyshov was able to speak to reporters before his first game.
“I feel great. It’s my dream. I feel great, amazing,” Chernyshov said. “[I was] shocked. JMac called me and said, Sharks called [me] up. I was shocked and so happy.”
Chernyshov has been one of the best prospects in the San Jose Sharks system. While playing a top-line role with the San Jose Barracuda, the winger has found success in all parts of the ice. Offensively, which is his calling card, Chernyshov has 23 points (11 goals, 13 assists) in 25 games.
“We’ll see what they can do. From the reports that we’ve gotten from watching him a little bit in the American League, he’s done some good things, on the scoresheet.” Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said of Chernyshov. “His play away from the puck. He’s been one of their best PK guys as well.”
Ethan Cardwell, who was also recalled from the San Jose Barracuda, said he’s excited to see the combination of Celebrini and Chernyshov.
“I think playing with a guy like Macklin is pretty special. Obviously, he’s gonna be a generational talent, one of the best. [He’s the] best player I’ve ever seen on the ice, anyway,” Cardwell said. “I had one shift with him in the rookie tournament a few years ago, and I was like, Holy sh*t, this guy can play. I can only imagine a full night with him.”
Cherynshov did his best to explain his excitement about playing with the San Jose Sharks superstar.
“He’s [the] leader on the team,” Chernyshov said. “I’m so happy to play with him. He’s really the best player.”
The San Jose Sharks are giving Chernyshov a prime opportunity to be an instant success at the NHL level. Part of the reasoning behind recalling a player like Chernyshov is that he can play higher in the lineup, which better suits his role. While being on the Sharks’ PK likely isn’t in the cards just yet, top-line offense and second-line power play are a perfect spot for the 20-year-old.
Cardwell said if Chernyshov spoke more English, he’d give him some words of wisdom that he got from his first NHL game.
“He’s got all the tools, right? I’m excited for him to get his first NHL game tonight,” Cardwell told SHD. “I remember mine. I was a little bit nervous, so I’m sure he’s feeling the same way. He doesn’t speak a ton of English, but if I can say anything to him, it’s to tell him to relax and enjoy it.”
