The Vancouver Canucks have made a new addition to the team’s leadership group following the trade of Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild last week, leaving them without a captain.

With rumors floating around since the end of the 2024-25 season, the day that Vancouver Canucks fans were dreading came on Friday, as the club traded captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild for a decent haul including future number one defenseman Zeev Buium.”Like Jim, I would also like to thank Quinn for everything he has done in Vancouver. Quinn played hard, led by example and did a lot of very good things for the Canucks. Trading away a player of this caliber is never an easy decision to make, but it was one we had to do to make our team better.” General Manager Patrik Allvin said about the Quinn Hughes trade.

The decision to trade Quinn Hughes has left a big hole on the Vancouver Canucks’ blue line that won’t be easy to fill, even though they have a future star in the aforementioned Zeev Buium, and if also meant for the first time since the summer of 2023, the club doesn’t have a captain.

Vancouver Canucks make new addition to leadership group following Quinn Hughes departure

While the league mandates teams to have three players wearing the ‘A’ on their sweaters during a game in the event they don’t have a captain and for while now, the Vancouver Canucks have been rotating their alternates, and it appears there’s a new addition to the leadership group.

“Adam Foote mentioned on Saturday that, for the first time in his NHL career, Filip Hronek will wear an “A” for Vancouver.” Trevor Beggs of Daily Hive said.

Hronek, who is under contract until the summer of 2032, is the perfect candidate to join the club’s leadership group as he already has plenty of experience under his belt, 483 NHL games to be exact, and could potentially be a candidate for the captaincy down the road too, whenever Adam Foote and his coaching staff decide to appoint Quinn Hughes’ successor.

The Hradec Kralove, Czechia native will likely have the ‘A’ on his jersey once again tonight as the Vancouver Canucks continue their road trip with a stop in Manhattan to face J.T. Miller and the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, with puck drop set for 4 p.m. PT on Sportsnet Pacific.
