Bruce Garrioch reports that Senators GM Steve Staios is actively hunting for top-nine help, and the target on his radar is the NHL’s hitting leader, Kiefer Sherwood. But here is the immediate catch that should make every Sens fan pause: The Vancouver Canucks are now reportedly asking for a First-Round Pick plus a roster player. Is a pending UFA rental worth mortgaging a piece of the franchise’s future?

Why Kiefer Sherwood Fits the Senators’ Blueprint

As an analyst watching this team closely, it’s obvious why Staios picked up the phone. The Senators are currently navigating a minefield of injuries, specifically losing a key forward like Shane Pinto. The bottom six has looked soft at times, lacking identity.

Enter Kiefer Sherwood. He isn’t just a plug-and-play forward; he is a chaotic element. With a $1.5 million cap hit, he fits the financial structure perfectly. He leads the league in hits by a wide margin and was on pace for a career year in goals (roughly 35) before a recent slump. He brings the exact brand of “hard-to-play-against” hockey that Ottawa needs to solidify a playoff push.

The Problem: The Price is Sky-High

Here is where my personal insight kicks in: Don’t fall in love with the player if the price breaks the bank.

The Canucks hold all the leverage. With the Bruins, Islanders, Lightning, Stars, and Flyers all kicking tires, Vancouver has shifted their ask from a “young prospect” to a “First-Round Pick and a Good Roster Player.”

For Ottawa, that likely means the 2026 or 2027 First-Rounder, plus a young asset. Would Staios part with a talent like Tyler Kleven or a high-end forward prospect for a rental who might walk in July? That feels like panic buying.

Is It Worth The Risk?

The Canucks are trying to spark a bidding war before the March 6 NHL trade deadline. If the Senators are serious, they are walking into a seller’s market. My take? Sherwood transforms the energy of the lineup, but a first-round pick is a “premium contender” price, and Ottawa isn’t one piece away from a Cup yet. If the price drops to a second-rounder and a B-level prospect, Staios should pull the trigger. If it stays at a first-rounder plus a roster player, the Senators need to hang up the phone.
