A new team has reportedly entered the mix to acquire Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood after he was placed on the trade block by the club in late November.

“According to several sources, the Vancouver Canucks have let it be known that – in an effort to get younger – they are willing to listen to offers on ‘veteran players.'” Elliotte Friedman said.

“The Canucks have shopped him around the league and originally wanted a good, young prospect. According to league sources, the Wild offered one (it’s unclear who) and the Canucks have since changed gears. Reportedly, they now want a good roster player and have also asked teams for a first-round pick.” Joe Smith and Michael Russo said recently about the asking price for Kiefer Sherwood.

It’s inevitable at this point that Kiefer Sherwood will be traded, but following the move of Quinn Hughes to Minnesota on Friday, things have quieted down a bit regarding the pending UFA forward.

“Consider Colorado a dark horse. The (23-2-7) Avalanche may be the last team that needs to make a splash, and the front office should be turning over every stone to ensure the roster’s as deep as possible. Sherwood, a former Av, would have no issue keeping up in coach Jared Bednar’s high-paced system,” John Matisz of theScore said recently.

Colorado, who Sherwood appeared in 27 games with between the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, could certainly use a player like him in their lineup as he’s someone who not only can produce in a bottom-six role, but uses his physical play to create chances for his teammates.

The Avalanche can certainly make it work cap-wise, as can most teams around the league because of Sherwood’s low salary of $1.5 million, however the one asset they do lack is a 2026 first round pick and without that, they’re going to have a tough time trying to land the Columbus, Ohio native.
