The Abbotsford Canucks are making a deep playoff run in the AHL, and 24-year-old goalie Arturs Silovs has been a key factor in their success.

With a 5-1-0 record, a stellar 1.74 goals-against average, and a .935 save percentage, Silovs has been instrumental in helping the Canucks reach the Pacific Division Final.

Arturs Silovs has been exceptional in leading the Abbotsford Canucks to victories over the Coachella Valley Firebirds and Tucson Roadrunners in the AHL Playoffs. He recorded shutouts to seal both series, showcasing his clutch performances. In the first round against Tucson, Silovs even stopped a penalty shot with just 35 seconds remaining, preventing a potential tying goal and helping secure the series win.

Noah Strang from DH Sports writes that Silovs made a significant impact last year during the NHL Playoffs when he was thrust into action as the Vancouver Canucks’ third-string goalie. Despite the unexpected circumstances, he stepped up and played a pivotal role in helping the team reach Game 7 of the second round, where they ultimately lost to the Edmonton Oilers.

“That success made him the team’s opening-night starter this year. However, he struggled in the NHL, finishing the year with a 2-6-1 record, a 3.65 goals-against average, and a .861 save percentage.” -Strang

The Canucks already have a full goalie lineup, with Kevin Lankinen signed for five more years and Thatcher Demko under contract for another season. That means there isn’t an obvious NHL spot for Silovs at the moment, unless the team decides to make a move involving Demko.

“This playoff experience should benefit Silovs’ development as he continues on his journey to breaking into the NHL full-time. Goalies often take longer to develop, and there’s still a runway for Silovs to become a contributor at the highest level.” -Strang

Abbotsford kicks off the next round of the playoffs on Friday, May 16, with the first two games of their best-of-five series against the Colorado Eagles taking place at home. The Eagles were the Pacific Division champions in the regular season and ranked third overall in points across the AHL.
