Vancouver Canucks Head Coach Adam Foote has given a big update on Elias Pettersson after missing the last five games with an upper-body injury.
From Nils Hoglander’s injury in the preseason that required surgery to Teddy Blueger who got hurt in his second game back from injured reserve and now Elias Pettersson, who after a tough start to the 2025-26 campaign has picked up the pace but is still out of the lineup due to an UBI.
“General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that F Elias Pettersson has been placed on IR (retroactive to Dec. 5) and F Marco Rossi has been activated from IR.” the Canucks said on social media on Sunday.
Vancouver Canucks’ Adam Foote gives injury update on Elias Pettersson
Ahead of practice on Thursday, Thomas Drance of The Athletic reported that Elias Pettersson has swapped his blue sweater, which is normally used by extras, for a white one, signalling that he could be a full participant during the team’s skate at the New York Islanders’ facility.
“Elias Pettersson wearing a white practice sweater ahead of #Canucks practice on Thursday. Extras typically wear blue.
A strong indication that Vancouver’s top centre will be a full participant this afternoon.” Drance said.
Pettersson ended up not being a full participant in Thursday’s practice and afterwards, Head Coach Adam Foote told reporters that Elias Pettersson is unlikely to play on Friday night against the New York Islanders, but could return on Saturday night as they take on the Boston Bruins.
“Sounds, based on what Adam Foote said after practice, like Elias Pettersson (c) is unlikely to play Friday vs. the Islanders.
If he doesn’t play Friday, then he won’t play Saturday in Boston.” Thomas Drance said on X.
Pettersson, a native of Sundsvall, Sweden, has appeared in 28 games for the Canucks this season where he’s registered 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists), ten penalty minutes and is a minus-eight.
We’ll have to wait for official confirmation from Adam Foote ahead of tonight’s game in case there’s a change in Elias Pettersson’s status, but it appears that the Canucks’ lineup will look similar to that of Tuesday’s shutout win over the New York Rangers.
