To what degree, we’ll find out with certainty when the Leafs take on the Predators in Nashville on Saturday night.

Reports from media on hand at the Leafs’ morning skate on Saturday at Bridgestone Arena indicated that Max Domi will be scratched for the second time in 2025-26.

David Alter of The Hockey News reported that Domi was on the ice with the other expected scratches after Berube did his media availability. Domi, who has one assist in his past six games, was also scratched on Nov. 28 in Washington.

If Domi is out, Matias Maccelli could play for the first time since Nov. 28.

Joseph Woll will start in goal.

Berube told the media that “there will be changes in the power play tonight.”

In terms of personnel?

“Yes,” Berube said.

No wonder.

The Leafs, losers of three of their past four games and just one point out of the Eastern Conference basement, have scored 12 power-play goals on 85 opportunities this season. Their success rate of 14.1% was 31st overall through National Hockey League games on Friday, better than only the Calgary Flames (14%). The Leafs have given up four shorthanded goals, tied for second-most in the NHL.

Play VideoOdd explanation

Berube wouldn’t elaborate on how the units will look against a Predators penalty kill that is 14th (81.5%). The coach was asked why the Leafs didn’t have power-play drills during practice on Friday in Washington before travelling.

“Just because I didn’t want to,” Berube said. “I wanted to work on other things. I didn’t want to be out there very long. That was the reason.”

If you’re scratching your head at that explanation, the line starts here.

Two players who have been part of the No. 1 unit — Matthew Knies and John Tavares — have gone a long time without scoring on the power play.

Knies has two power-play goals, none since Oct. 28; Tavares has two, none since Nov. 8. William Nylander, meanwhile, has not scored a power-play goal since Nov. 22.

‘We can be a lot better’

No matter who the 18 skaters are, the Leafs can’t be as bad (or can they?) as they were in a 4-0 loss on Thursday in Washington against the Capitals.

“A response (is what he is looking for),” Berube said. “We can be a lot better. Nobody was happy after that game. We had a good meeting about it all and I think we’re on the same page, ready to go tonight.

“We have to move on and play the way we can.

“(The leaders) definitely have to lead. They were vocal about things the other night, which was good to see.”

Berube had updates, to a degree, on defenceman Chris Tanev and goalie Anthony Stolarz, both recovering from upper-body injuries.

On Stolarz, Berube said the netminder will be seeing a specialist “soon” after celebrating the birth of a baby.

On Tanev, Berube said: “He is skating, he is progressing, he feels good on the ice, but there are still decisions that have to be made with him personally and doctors.”
