San Jose Sharks superstar Macklin Celebrini has played his way onto Team Canada’s Olympic roster, at least that is what top NHL insiders are reporting.
TSN and The Athletic NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun reported this week that among the players who didn’t play for Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off, Celebrini is among the top candidates to make the team. In 36 games played this season, Celebrini’s 54 points rank third in the NHL behind only Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon.
Both MacKinnon and McDavid have already been named to the Canadian Olympic team.
“The forwards who weren’t at 4 Nations who have pushed up the highest are Macklin Celebrini, Tom Wilson, Bo Horvat, and Nick Suzuki. I think Celebrini and Wilson are most likely in,” LeBrun writes for The Athletic. “I’m not sure if Team Canada can take both Horvat and Suzuki or just one of them.”
The Sharks forward has never been too fond of speaking about himself. His focus has remained on getting the Sharks back to the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Following Tuesday’s 6-3 over the Calgary Flames, that’s all Celerbini could think about.
“We are at 16 [wins], and we had 20 all of last year. I think we’re just doing a great job of playing. I mean, we are in a playoff spot, which is kind of new for me,” Celebrini said.
LeBrun added to his report about the San Jose Sharks forward during TSN’s Insider Trading last Thursday.
“Team Canada’s management had another call slated for Thursday night to go over these agonizing decisions. I think Celebrini and Wilson are as close to locks as there are,” LeBrun said.
While the Sharks were in Toronto, Celebrini was flooded with questions about representing his country at just 19 years old.
“It’s a dream of every kid who grows up in Canada. Right when the season started, that wasn’t really my focus; it’s still not my focus [because I] can’t really control what they decide or what they do,” Celebrini told reporters. “But being on that team would be a huge honor.”
His two-way effort and success from those efforts make him a perfect candidate to play any role for Team Canada at the Olympics. Sidney Crosby has taken the San Jose Sharks centerman under his wing. During the 2025 World Championships, Celebrini and Crosby showcased terrific chemistry.
Team Canada will announce its official preliminary roster on New Year’s Eve, which is also the deadline for teams to submit their rosters to the IIHF and the Olympics.
