If you are a regular listener of the Philadelphia Flyers radio broadcasts, you likely noticed a different voice handling Dec. 20 play-by-play duties when the Flyers traveled to Madison Square Garden to take on the New York Rangers.

That was due to the two-game suspension the team imposed on regular announcer Tim Saunders, who was serving the first game of the suspension Saturday for an inappropriate comment caught on a hot mic during the Dec. 18 game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Filling in Saturday was Brian Smith, the Flyers’ director of broadcasting and content. He was paired with regular color analyst Todd Fedoruk.

The Dec. 18 radio broadcast was supposed to go to a commercial break during the third period of the Flyers-Buffalo Sabres game. Saunders was heard humming for a few seconds before making inappropriate remarks.

“These remarks do not reflect the standards of conduct or values from anyone associated with our organization,” the Flyers said in a statement. “Effective immediately, the Flyers, along with our radio partners, 97.5 The Fanatic, have issued a two-game suspension while we address this matter with all parties involved.”

Saunders later apologized. “I recognize how offensive my remarks were, and the harm it has caused,” he said. “I take full responsibility and sincerely apologize to the Flyers, 97.5 The Fanatic and all those affected by my remarks.

“To all Flyers fans and listeners of our broadcast, I promise that I will hold myself to a higher standard moving forward to ensure our broadcast is a safe and respectful place everyone can enjoy.”

Smith will be back behind the mic for the game against the Vancouver Canucks on Dec. 22.

Saunders is scheduled to return for the Flyers’ game on Dec. 23.
