It’s four days before Christmas, the NHL has played about 44 percent of its schedule and the Detroit Red Wings own the second-best record in the Eastern Conference.

It wasn’t that long ago that Red Wings stories were about inconsistency, their inability properly manage a game. Today, Red Wings stories are about how they have sorted out their issues and understand how they need to play. They are looking rather impressive with a 7-1-2 record in their last 10.

How in the world is this happening?

Goalie John Gibson has won seven games in a row. Alex DeBrincat is on a path to a 40-goal season. Andrew Copp is plus-11 in his past nine games. James van Riemsdyk is giving the Red Wings the secondary scoring they need. John Leonard has been early Christmas present. Moritz Seider has been a relentless beast.

The Red Wings are certainly not a lock to make the playoffs — with plenty of season left to play. But they look better heading into Christmas than they looked on Thanksgiving.

The Red Wings downed the Washington Capitals 5-2 Saturday in Washington. But today, they could make a real statement if they take down Alex Ovechkin a second time in two days. Detroit has scored four or more goals seven times in their last 10 games.

Former Detroit player Jonatan Berggren posted a power play goal and an assist to help the St. Louis Blues upend the Florida Panthers 6-2. Since the Blues claimed Berggren on waivers from Detroit, the Swedish forward has two goals and two assists for four points in three games. He is playing on the Blues’ top line with Robert Thomas and Pavel Buchnevich.
