The goaltending situation continues to evolve for the Montreal Canadiens. Samuel Montembeault will ultimately not be joining the team in Pittsburgh as initially planned.

The plan was adjusted in the last few hours.

Montembeault will now join the Habs only after the Christmas break, which directly changes the short-term outlook.

This decision fits within the same logic recently mentioned by the organization.

The goal was to avoid unnecessary travel and to maintain a stable structure around the goaltender, who will now be able to spend time with Marco Marciano.

Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler remain the two goaltenders the Montreal Canadiens trust, at least for now

Tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Jakub Dobes could be called upon to guard the crease.

For Tuesday’s game against the Boston Bruins, the scenario could be just as intriguing. Jacob Fowler would be in position to earn another start, just days after his shutout against Pittsburgh.

That performance may have had an impact on the Montreal Canadiens’ decision not to have Montembeault travel to Pittsburgh.

“Samuel Montembeault was initially supposed to join the Canadiens in Pittsburgh, but plans changed and he will now rejoin the team after the Christmas break.”

Patrick Friolet, RDS

Things could become very interesting when Montembeault returns, that’s for sure!
