Copper Kings 6, Trojans 3
CALUMET — Forward Luke Hamlin scored twice as the Calumet Copper Kings hockey team scored four times in the second period en route to a 6-3 win Friday over the Trenton Trojans at the Calumet Colosseum.
Coming into the middle frame, the Copper Kings led 2-1 before Rogan Gronlund found the net for the second time this season at 2:12. Forward Brady Boberg picked up the lone assist on the goal.
Hamlin then scored his third and fourth goals of the season just under five minutes apart. His first came at 2:52 and the second game at 7:25. Defenseman Sawyer Garrow assisted on the first goal and forward Josh Asiala on the second one.
The Trojans scored twice to make it a 5-3 game, but co-captain Erik Loukus found the net on the power play at 16:33 to put the game out of reach. The goal, his fifth of the season, was assisted by forwards Ben Anderson and Nathan Londo.
In the first period, defenseman Drake Niemala put Calumet on the board first just 21 seconds into the game. Forward Oskar Loukus picked up the assist on the tally, which was Niemala’s first of the season.
Boberg made it 2-0 Copper Kings just 1:08 later with his first of the season. Garrow and Gronlund assisted on the goal.
Trenton cut the lead in half at 9:21, but that was as close as they ever got in the game.
Goaltender Beau Jukuri made 35 saves to earn the win. Aiden Petrimoulx and Theo Dull combined to make 28 saves for the Trojans in the loss.
Eagles 3, Copper Kings 1
CALUMET — The Copper Kings tied things at 1-1 in the third period against the Hartland Eagles, but could not hold off a pair of late goals in a 3-1 loss Saturday at the Calumet Colosseum.
The Eagles (9-2 overall) jumped out to a 1-0 lead 9:27 into the game when Derek Janis scored on the power play.
Londo evened things at 1-1 just 4:23 into the third. His 10th goal of the season was assisted by Erik Loukus.
The game remained 1-1 until the late stages, when Max Bogotaitis struck with 3:33 left. Then Drake Callanan extended the lead with just 86 seconds left in regulation.
Jukuri made 27 saves in the loss for Calumet. Vinnie Sabala stopped 23 for the Eagles in the win.
Gremlins 2, Eagles 1
HOUGHTON — The Houghton Gremlins hockey team and Eagles needed extra time to sort out a game Friday night at Dee Stadium. The Gremlins emerged victorious in the end, 2-1.
Gremlins captain Connor Arko scored the game-winning goal at 4:53 of the overtime period. Forwards Jack Sayen and Brody Donnelly both assisted on the tally, which was Arko’s sixth of the season.
After a first period that saw both teams feel each other out and the Eagles come away with a 6-4 advantage in shots, the teams were deadlocked at 0-0.
Sayen changed that with 6:39 left in the middle frame when he found the net for the second time this season. Arko and defenseman Wesley Mattila assisted on the goal.
However, the lead was short-lived as the Eagles tied it just 2:38 later when Nate Halonen found the net.
Houghton outshot the Eagles in the second, 13-8, but only scored the one goal. In the third, both teams put nine shots on net, but neither found the net again.
Goaltender Brycyn Nettell made 22 stops for Houghton to earn the win. Vinnie Sabala stopped 26 for the Eagles.
Gremlins 5, Trojans 4
HOUGHTON — The Gremlins struck four times in the third period and erased a 3-1 deficit to come away with a 5-4 win over the Trojans Saturday at Dee Stadium.
The onslaught started with a goal from Donnelly 2:46 into the period. His fourth goal of the season was assisted by defenseman Jake Matson and Mattila.
Arko sandwiched a pair of goals around a shorthanded tally by Brett Allen of the Trojans. His first came on the power play at 10:30. Donnelly and Mattila both assisted on the tally.
Then, Arko scored again with 2:26 left in regulation to even the game at 4-4. Donnelly and Matson assisted on the goal, which was Arko’s eighth of the season.
Forward Noah Maillette put the Gremlins (6-5-1 overall) ahead for good with 1:41 left in the game. The goal was his ninth of the season.
Sayen put Houghton up 1-0 14:12 into the game. The power play tally was his third of the season. Donnelly and Arko both earned assists on the goal.
Aidan Daugherty scored to even things with just one second left in the first and then again just 1:26 into the second period. Allen added his first goal of the day at 12:00.
Goaltender Cooper Flachs made 15 saves to earn the win for Houghton. Dull stopped 35 in the loss for the Trojans.
Jets 8, Miners 1
NEGAUNEE — The Jeffers Jets hockey team scored twice in the first, twice more in the second and then doubled that total in the third to skate away with an 8-1 win over the Negaunee Miners Saturday.
Forward Max Nordstrom put the Jets on the board 10:45 into the game. The power play goal was his fifth of the year. Defenseman Griffin Heinonen and co-captain Brogan Turner each assisted on the goal.
Forward Cameron Anderson scored his 12th of the season at 16:39. Turner picked up the lone assist.
The Miners cut the lead in half when Luc Cambensy scored just 41 seconds into the middle frame.
The game remained 1-1 until forward Easton Therrian put the Jets back up by two at 11:54 while on the power play. Alternate captain Blake Heltunen and Turner both assisted on the goal.
Turner then scored the first of two with 2:08 left in the period. His power play goal was assisted by Nordstrom.
Turner then scored his 18th of the season just 4:19 into the third. Forward Vinney Seratti and Heltunen both assisted on the goal.
Therrian scored his second of the game and seventh of the season with 6:10 left. Turner and Nordstrom both assisted on the power play goal.
Defenseman Ryan Turpeinen scored his first goal of the season with just 35 seconds left in the game. Turner and Heltunen both assisted on the power play goal.
Forward Matthew Rinkinen then capped the scoring with just four seconds left. His first goal of the season was assisted by forwards Carson L’Esperance and Drake Heinonen.
Goaltender Pierce Johnson stopped 16 shots to earn the win for the Jets. Kurt O’Brien stopped 33 in the loss for the Miners.
