Bo Horvat remains doubtful to play Tuesday night against the New Jersey Devils, but for the New York Islanders, simply seeing their top center back on the ice Monday felt like a meaningful step forward — and an encouraging confirmation that the original recovery timeline is holding.
Horvat skated with the New York Islanders at Northwell Health Ice Center wearing a red non-contact jersey, marking his first practice with the team since suffering a lower-body injury on Dec. 11 against Anaheim. While he did not take line rushes and worked as an extra, the sight of Horvat moving comfortably and rejoining the group reinforced optimism that the Islanders’ most important offensive player is tracking toward a return shortly after the holiday break.
“It’s good to be back in the room with the guys and back on the ice,” Horvat said. “I’m really happy with how it’s progressed.”
That progression matters. Horvat has missed four straight games, and while the Islanders have battled through it, posting a 1-2-1 record in his absence, the impact of losing their offensive engine has been clear. Horvat leads the team with 31 points (19 goals, 12 assists), and his 19 goals are tied for sixth in the NHL. His presence drives the power play, stabilizes the top six, and draws defensive attention that opens space for others.

Head coach Patrick Roy stressed caution, but acknowledged the positive signs.
“It was nice,” Roy said. “He was wearing a non-contact jersey today and it seems like things are going the right way. I’m doubtful for tomorrow, but obviously it was good to see him out there.”
For now, the Islanders will likely continue to tread water without him. But Horvat skating when expected — and looking comfortable doing it — suggests the injury is responding as hoped. With a light schedule surrounding the holidays, the bigger picture comes into focus: getting Horvat fully healthy, not rushed, and ready to reinsert himself into the lineup when the games resume in earnest.
If Monday was any indication, that return may be right on schedule.
