The Vancouver Canucks appeared to make a mistake by trading away a former first round pick Vasily Podkolzin who is now in the middle of a breakout season with their biggest rival the Edmonton Oilers.
However, as is the case with any General Manager around the National Hockey League, they also have ones that’ll come back to bite them in the behind and for Patrik Allvin, that would be the Bo Horvat blockbuster with the New York Islanders in early 2023, with Finnish centerman Aatu Raty being the the best piece from that trade.
Aside from the Bo Horvat deal, there is one other trade that Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin made well over a year ago involving a former first round pick that is turning out to be a big mistake for the organization.

“Now? Podkolzin is thriving with the Oilers, while the Canucks are entering a rebuild.
You know what would be nice to have in a rebuild? A 24-year-old homegrown talent who’s about to enter his prime. That’s exactly where Podkolzin is in his development.” Beggs said.
A big reason for trading the Moscow, Russia native ahead of the 2024-25 season was due to his waiver status and the club not wanting to lose him for nothing on the wire towards the end of training camp, with a similar situation taking place this past summer with Latvian goaltender Arturs Silovs.
In 37 games this season, Podkolzin is tied for seventh on the team in points with Zach Hyman at 16 (nine goals, seven assists), 13 penalty minutes and is a plus-12 while averaging 15:25 of ice time per night.
Looking back now, it’s safe to say that the Vancouver Canucks probably regret doing this trade with the Edmonton Oilers, however it was a necessary move at the time and unfortunately for Patrik Allvin, it’s backfired in a big way.
