Boston Bruins star defenseman Charlie McAvoy has reflected on his recent injury, which he called the most frustrating injury he’s had.
McAvoy was struck in the face by the puck after Montreal Canadiens’ defenseman Noah Dobson shot it at the net. The Bruins’ star immediately went down in pain as the injury was serious, which resulted in McAvoy getting facial surgery.
After having surgery, McAvoy was on a liquid-only diet, which resulted in him losing 20 pounds in the first week and a half.
”It might be the most frustrating injury I think I’ve had,” McAvoy said, via Bruins.com. “You don’t really ever think about eating, drinking, stuff like that – you take it for granted, I guess.
“Through the injuries in the mouth, the intubation, the surgery – I had a lot of canker sores and stuff. It was just a lot of discomfort that took seven to 10 days after the surgery to get over that hump.”

McAvoy ended up missing nearly a month due to the injury. On Tuesday, McAvoy and Boston will play the Canadiens again, and he praised Montreal’s medical staff for helping him through the injury.
“Just grateful now to be on the other side, to be on track and getting healthy,” McAvoy added. “And grateful for all the doctors, not just in Montreal, but here in Boston, that took such good care of me.
“When you come back, I always just feel really appreciative for the people who helped me get back every time.”
