Despite what the standings showed entering Tuesday’s game, the odds were somewhat stacked against the Flyers. They may have been facing the team in last place in the NHL standings without two of its leading scorers, but had to travel on Monday night and play in a back-to-back while the opposition had already had some extended time off.
No matter for the Flyers, who continued to be resilient and come through as the season nears the halfway point. The Flyers handled business against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday, picking up a 3-1 win to go into the holiday break.
The Flyers opened the scoring at 10:17 of the first period. Trevor Zegras set up Travis Konecny on the backdoor for his 11th goal of the season to make it 1-0.
Through 20 minutes, shots were 7-4 Flyers.
The Flyers added to the lead on the power play at 11:13 of the second. Konecny set up Noah Cates in front of the net for his ninth goal of the season to make it a two-goal game.
With under two minutes to play in the second, the Blackhawks got on the board at 4-on-4. Ryan Donato got positioning in the slot and scored his ninth goal of the season to cut the lead to one.
Through two periods, shots were 16-14 Flyers.
The Flyers weathered the storm in the third as the Blackhawks made their push. After killing a penalty with 4:24 to play, the Flyers quickly put the game away with an empty-net goal by Carl Grundstrom with 2:08 to play to make it 3-1.
Sam Ersson made 20 saves on 21 shots in the win. Spencer Knight made 23 saves on 25 shots in the loss.
Konecny and Sean Couturier each had two points in the win.
The Flyers enter the holiday break with a 19-10-7 record through 36 games, a total of 45 points, and sit second in the Metropolitan Division.
They return to the ice on Sunday night against the Seattle Kraken at 8 p.m.
