The Nashville Predators beat the Minnesota Wild 3-2 at Grand Casino Arena on Dec. 23 on Steven Stamkos’ overtime goal.
The Wild held an early 1-0 lead following a Brock Faber goal, but the Predators took a 2-1 lead on power play goals by Ryan O’Reilly and Roman Josi.
Joel Eriksson Ek tied the game early in the second period on a delayed penalty, setting up a 2-2 game heading into the third period.
The game slowed to a halt in the third period, giving way to overtime, where Stamkos buried a pass from Erik Haula for the win.
Special teams were crucial for Nashville — the power play scored twice and the penalty kill held the Wild scoreless on three power plays.
Next up, Nashville (16-16-4, 36 points) visits the St. Louis Blues on Dec. 27, while Minnesota (22-10-6, 50 points) visits the Winnipeg Jets on Dec. 27.
Tyson Jost was called for tripping early in the third penalty, but the Predators’ penalty kill held strong. In fact, the best scoring chance on the Wild power play came shorthanded from the Predators: Nick Blankenburg nearly poked home Ryan O’Reilly’s pass for the go-ahead goal.
This is fun game to watch if you like special teams. Nashville has two power play goals and have stopped both Wild power plays.
Shots are 24-20 in favor of the Wild, but the Predators are playing well.
An encounter between Michael McCarron and Mats Zuccarello led to simultaneous slashing penalties for each. McCarron left the game holding his hand for a moment, but came back to serve his penalty.
The officials review Zuccarello’s slash for a major penalty, but upheld it as a minor.
Less than a minute into the second period and Minnesota ties the game. A delayed penalty to Brady Skjei leads to a game tying goal by Joel Eriksson Ek. The Wild scored with the extra attacker, though it doesn’t go down as a power play goal.
Not the way Nashville wanted to start the second period.
Another penalty by Minnesota, another goal for Nashville. Roman Josi’s hard wrist shot beats Gustavsson on his glove side to give the Predators a 2-1 lead.
Suddenly, Nashville’s power play is a real weapon.
A tripping call on Minnesota put Nashville on the play. With the first power play unit on the ice, the Predators tie the game. Ryan O’Reilly slides the puck into the net after Luke Evangelista’s shot bounced off Gustavsson’s pads.
Nice bounce back from the Predators after the early Wild goal.
The Predators were outshooting the Wild early, but Minnesota capitalized first. Brock Faber launched a long range shot that snuck by Juuse Saros on the near side to give the Wild a 1-0 lead.
Not sure why Saros didn’t see that puck. There was some traffic in front, but the puck came on the near side and it seemed easy to stop.
Here’s how the Predators will lineup against the Wild:
Filip Forsberg – Ryan O’Reilly – Steven Stamkos
Michael Bunting – Erik Haula – Luke Evangelista
Tyson Jost – Fedor Svechkov – Matthew Wood
Reid Schaefer – Michael McCarron – Cole Smith
Defense:
Roman Josi – Nick Perbix
Brady Skjei – Adam Wilsby
Nicolas Hague – Nick Blankenburg
Goaltender: Juuse Saros
The Nashville Predators vs. Minnesota Wild game will be televised by ESPN+ and Hulu. Streaming is available via FUBO and ESPN+ (outside of the Nashville TV market).
