The San Jose Sharks will have a sour taste in their mouth as the Vegas Golden Knights pummeled them 7-2 in the final game before the NHL’s Chirstmas break.
Mitch Marner scored twice for the Golden Knights, who snapped a two game losing streak. Carter Hart made 19 saves for the win. Brett Howden, Mark Stone, Colton Sissons, Reilly Smith and Tomas Hertl also all scored for VGK.
Macklin Celebrini tied an NHL record with his 55th point of the season. That matches Sidney Crosby for the most points by a teenager before Christmas. Collin Graf, who was playing with a full face shield, socred for the third straight game, giving him 10 on the season. Tyler Toffoli also had two assists.
Yaroslav Askarov started for the Sharks but was pulled after he gave up four goals on 16 shots. Alex Nedeljkovic made seven saves in relief.
The Sharks were yet again shell-shocked by a veteran vegas team. Jack Eichel didn’t play due to an udisclosed injury. The Golden Knights now have a 12 game point streak agaisnt the Sharks.
After tonight, the San Jose Sharks and the rest of the NHL will go on a three-day break.
Howden gave the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead 1:46 into the first period. Braeden Bowman found Howden on a perfect two-on-one after a turnover on the offensive blue line by Nick Leddy.
Marner made it 2-0 with a power play goal at 9:07. Marner was trying to make a seam pass, but the puck bounced off Alex Wennberg’s skate and into the net.
Sissons made it 3-0 at 11:37. Keegan Kolesar found the Golden Knights winger on yet another 2-on-1.
Hertl makes it 4-0 at 14:57 to chase Askarov out of the net. A bad turnover by Ty Dellandrea let Hertl cash in right in front.
Stone continued the first period onslaught to make it 5-0 at 18:34.
Celebrini got the Sharks on the board with a goal at 6:49 of the second period. After Tyler Toffoli created a turnover on the wing, he fed Celebrini in the middle and his wrist shot beat Hart over the blocker.
Smith made it 6-1 with a one-timer off a face-off at 18:50.
Marner made it 7-1 with his second goal of the game at 5:22.
Graf scored his 10th goal of the season to cut it to 7-2.
