The Vegas Golden Knights are dealing with a number of injuries to key players, including defenseman Shea Theodore, who was officially moved to injured reserve on Tuesday.

Shea Theodore

Theodore is considered week-to-week with an upper-body injury, though it’s not clear when he sustained the injury. He last played Dec. 13 against the Blue Jackets, recording an assist in 22:43.

Theodore was initially labeled day-to-day when he missed practice last week, though his status was later changed by head coach Bruce Cassidy on Dec. 19. However, Cassidy said at the time that he doesn’t believe it will be a long-term injury.

It has been a relatively quiet year for Theodore thus far. After setting career highs last season with 50 assists and 57 points in 67 games, he has just four goals and 20 points in 31 games this year.

Theodore joins William Karlsson on injured reserve, with Adin Hill on long-term injured reserve and Alex Pietrangelo on season-ending LTIR.

William Karlsson

Karlsson also is considered week-to-week after suffering a lower-body injury back on Nov. 8 against Anaheim. He has played just 14 games this season, recording four goals and seven points while averaging 15:09.

The Vegas bench boss said he expects Karlsson will join the team before the Olympic break.

“I’m assuming he’s back before the Olympics,” Cassidy said, “but we’ll leave his designation what it is.”

The Golden Knights’ final game before the break is a home tilt against Los Angeles on Feb. 5.

Jack Eichel

The Golden Knights are down two centers at the moment, though, as Jack Eichel remains out of the lineup.

There was some uncertainty surrounding Eichel’s status due to conflicting reports about whether he was held out of the Dec. 17 game against New Jersey due to illness or injury. Unexpectedly, Cassidy said after that game that he wasn’t sure how much time Eichel would miss. He has since clarified that Eichel left practice (on Dec. 16) due to illness but also has an injury.

“[Eichel’s] got a lower-body as well,” Cassidy said. “He wasn’t feeling well the other day, and there’s a lot going on. … Maybe next week we’ll see where he’s at.”

Prior to Tuesday’s game against San Jose, Cassidy reiterated that Eichel is day-to-day but did not provide a timeline regarding his return. He did, however, say that Eichel’s role in the Olympics shouldn’t be at stake, indicating a potential return in the coming weeks.

Eichel has now missed the last four games and did not travel with the club on its recent two-game road trip to Alberta. He leads the team with 41 points in 31 games.

Adin Hill

Hill remains on injured reserve after sustaining a lower-body injury back on Oct. 20 against Carolina. He faced four shots but was forced to leave the game 9:54 into the first period. He was replaced by Akira Schmid, who turned aside 22 of 23 shots to help Vegas defeat the then-undefeated Hurricanes.

Cassidy said Hill remains week-to-week but is “getting closer.”

Hill went 1-0-2 with a 2.73 goals-against average and .888 save percentage in five starts before the injury.

The hope is for Hill to return at some point in January, though his status of week-to-week has not changed in over two months.

In the mean time, Schmid and Carter Hart will continue to share crease duties.

Dylan Coghlan

With Theodore hitting IR, Vegas also announced on Tuesday that defenseman Dylan Coghlan has been recalled from the AHL Henderson Silver Knights.

Coghlan is serving his second stint with the Golden Kights.

Of his 112 career NHL games, 88 (78.6 percent) of them have been played in a Golden Knights sweater, including 29 in 2020-21 and 59 in 2021-22. Coghlan scored six goals and 19 points in those 88 games, most notably recording a hat trick in March 2021 against the Minnesota Wild.

Coghlan has five goals and 11 points in 23 games with Henderson this season.

He was originally part of the Max Pacioretty salary-dump trade with Caroina in July 2022. Vegas reacquired him this summer via free agency, signing him to a one-year, $775,000 contract.
