A National Hockey League insider has revealed what the Vancouver Canucks’ hybrid retool could actually look like after backpedaling on their original plans.
After a poor start to the 2025-26 season, the Vancouver Canucks organization has already undergone a massive change with the departure of Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild and the moves aren’t expected to slow down anytime soon.
“We felt that the package Minnesota came up with, with the younger players and it gives us a chance to step back here and retool it a little bit with a hybrid form and getting two young players, Buium is 20, Ohgren is 21 and we needed a center here and Rossi is a highly-talented player that’s very consistent in the league and just 24.” Allvin said.

Patrik Allvin’s comments confused many earlier this week and left the entire fan base questioning the direction of this organization both in the short-term and long-term, as it’s clear they’re nowhere close to being a Stanley Cup contender
In an article for The Athletic on Tuesday, National Hockey League insider Thomas Drance broke down what this “hybrid retool” could end up looking like for the Vancouver Canucks and how they’ll plan to approach the remainder of this season and next.
According to Drance, the Canucks aren’t going to tear this group down completely and are focused on taking a bit of a step back for the rest of the 2025-26 campaign and potentially the 2026-27 season as well.
Drance also added that despite the team’s recent winning streak and if they are to go on any between now and Friday, March 6th, Patrik Allvin won’t be going out onto the trade market to bring any veteran players in for a playoff push, which is exactly the news Canucks fans were hoping to hear.
When it comes to players on their own roster that could be on the move between now and the trade deadline, Drance believes that Kiefer Sherwood will almost certainly net the club a massive return following reports that the Canucks are seeking a first round pick for him.
Beyond Sherwood, another name to keep an eye on is Evander Kane as while he might have a bit of a limited market due to his performance this season and his salary, there will still be a handful of clubs that’ll want the veteran forward given his experience in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The next couple of months are going to be very interesting for the Vancouver Canucks organization, and Patrik Allvin, along with President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford, need to do everything in their power to ensure this group is set up for success in the years to come.
