Canada has unveiled that Michigan State University forward and Philadelphia Flyers draft pick Porter Martone has been named captain ahead of the 2026 World Junior Championship in Minnesota.
Utah Mammoth prospect Cole Beaudoin and Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Harrison Brunicke will serve as alternates.
Martone is set for his second World Juniors, having played a depth role with the team in Ottawa. He served as Canada’s captain at the 2024 U-18 World Championship, where he finished second in team scoring en route to a gold medal in Finland.
The 19-year-old also won silver at the 2022 U-17 World Challenge and bronze at the 2023 U-18 World Championship. Martone also has experience with the men’s senior national team, getting into a pair of games at the 2025 World Championship.
Beaudoin is also set for his tournament return, having played all throughout Canada’s lineup last year. The 19-year-old had one assist in five games, and was also ejected from the quarterfinal game against Czechia, playing just 47 seconds. Back in the OHL, Beaudoin is tracking for just under points with the Barrie Colts, where he currently serves as captain.
Brunicke has spent the entire season playing pro hockey. He started the year with the Penguins, where he has one point in nine games. He also had a handful of appearances with the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins after joining the team on a conditioning stint.
Canada will open the tournament with an 8:30 PM ET bout with Czechia on Dec. 26. They’ll face Latvia, Denmark and Finland to close out the round-robin, with the team hoping to avoid a third consecutive quarterfinal exit.
