As the Vancouver Canucks get ready to resume hockey in just under a week, their last matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers attracted a particular amount of attention as Edmonton Oilers scouts were spotted taking some serious interest in the Canucks players.
Although they got the best return package they could have when they received future superstars Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Ohgren and a first-round pick, it appears that general manager Patrik Allvin might not be done making moves.
Edmonton Oilers scouts at recent Vancouver Canucks game
Now that the team is in a “hybrid” rebuild phase, the team is in constant talks with other clubs, and one partner in particular is leading the pack.
Repeated scouting trips suggest Edmonton isn’t just checking box scores. They’re watching which players get used in what situations, and how they do. Who’s out there at the end of close games? Who’s good at pressuring the other team? Who can handle the speed when things get intense? You can only really see that stuff in person, and it matters a lot when you’re thinking about how someone will do in the playoffs.
One name that clearly stands out as a sensible target is Kiefer Sherwood, who has been in constant trade rumours since the year began.
Sherwood doesn’t generate headlines, but he checks several boxes the Oilers have quietly prioritized in recent seasons. He plays with pace, isn’t afraid of contact, and can contribute offense without needing prime power-play minutes.
