A day after the Leafs fired assistant coach Marc Savard, GM Brad Treliving made a bold statement on Craig Berube’s future when he was asked about his coach’s future.
Hired to run the Leafs’ power-play, his time had run out as it was far from, let’s say, powerful, so far this season, producing just 12 goals on 90 opportunities.
Insider Provides Clarity on Treliving and Berube
Following the firing of Savard, it was speculated that Treliving or Berube – or both, could be next on the chopping block.
Treliving Comments on Berube’s Status
The Leafs’ GM met with the media following practice on Tuesday ahead of their afternoon game against the Pittsburgh Penguins today.
There, he was asked about Berube’s future with the organization.
“I want to make it clear. I support Craig fully,” said Treliving in regards to those questions.
Berube has two seasons left on his contract after this one and while Treliving believes Berube can get the team back on track, the money owed may have played a role in any idea of his dismissal.
Should the Leafs come out of the Christmas break and continue to flounder however, the heat will only be turned up on the GM and bench boss to make significant changes.
