The Toronto Maple Leafs have added Steve Sullivan to the team’s coaching staff, it was announced Friday.

The move comes following the firing of assistant coach Marc Savard on Monday.

Sullivan, 51, joins the Maple Leafs after serving as an assistant on the Toronto Marlies (AHL) coaching staff for the past two seasons under John Gruden.

Prior to his time in Toronto, Sullivan worked in the Arizona Coyotes’ organization in a number of roles, including assistant general manager, director of player development, and executive vice-president of hockey operations. He was promoted as the team’s interim general manager in July 2020, before ceding the role to Bill Armstrong in September of that year.

The Timmins, Ont. native played in the NHL for 16 seasons, totaling 290 goals and 747 points across 1,011 career games spent with the New Jersey Devils, Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Coyotes.

He now joins a Maple Leafs staff that will look to turn the team’s season around following a 16-15-5 start to the year. Toronto sits in last place in the Atlantic Division with 37 points from 36 games.
